The Unilever Series, Sunflower Seeds, is an exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The sculptural installation is a vast, flat landscape of sunflower seed husks which covers the entire east end of the Turbine Hall at Tate.
As each visitor walks accross the surface of the work they slowly discover that each seed is is not that of a sunflower but acutally a collection of over 100 million individually handmade replica porclein objects - all 100 million of them are totally unique!
The sunflower seed exhibition represents many things for the Chinese artist. They carry a very personal association from the Cultural Revolution of 1966 to 1976. Individuals during this revolution were stripped of personal freedom and Ai remembers the sharing of sunflower seeds as a gesture of human compassion, during a time of extreme poverty, repression and uncertainty.
It also represents the idea of mass production and traditional craftsmanship and it gives insight into thinking more deeply about the‘Made in China’ phenomenon.
Such iincredible meaning behind the work itself and I am just so amazed at the sheer size of this project! Ai must have a bucket load of patience!!! Something I totally admire in people as I have absolutely none!!
