Behind Bones Lie Vintage

Melissa from Bones Lie took a little time out last week to speak with with Brisbane a la mode about what goes on behind the scenes of a successful online, vintage label!

Melissa also gives us a little insight into what inspires her to lovingly hand select these special pieces - pieces that are ultimately given a second chance at being loved all over again thanks to the Bones Lie vintage online store!

How did the Bones Lie Vintage business come about?

People around me were expressing how difficult it is to find rad things from op shops, and liked thrifted items that I wore thinking it was designer .so I thought it would be cool to do the hard work in finding/altering clothes to make it easier for people that like vintage but don't really know how to find it/wear it.

Bones Lie has been described as dark & edgy. What influences contribute to the creation of this style?    

I think that my own style and taste has alot to do with the items that I choose to buy and sell. I've always been heavily influenced by music so I guess it's where the grungy and understated style comes from. Of course loving fashion also plays a big part, trying to incorporate bones lie style in with trends at the same time :)

When you select a vintage piece for the store what are you looking for and is quality or style more important?

I'm looking for wearability.. I'm not going to promote something that my peers or I wouldn't wear. Generally I'm on the hunt for unique material, colours and texture and often items that have a modernised feel. quality definitely comes into every piece because being vintage, you want to make sure it's still in great condition, but my first choice is style as I can alter quality as I go along.

You guys alter your items in your Brisbane studio, how much work goes into each piece?

Some pieces don't need anything at all which is great! But I find it's really just simple alterations that make a big difference - like shortening a skirt and leaving raw hem lines, removing collars for open necklines, cropping tops etc.

Do you live and breathe fashion?

Fashion is a huge part of my life because It brings me opportunities to be creative and express myself which is why I also love vintage so much - each item no one else has, and it's just for that one person because each person is unique.

What do you think about Brisbane street style?

I think that we're a little bit slow on the fashion bandwagon ... but there are definitely more people emerging that are unafraid of people's perceptions and wear more bold, creative outfits which is so cool to see.

Lastly, what is your favorite piece in the collection or in your wardrobe right now and what is on your wish list?  

My favourite thing in the collection right now is the unisex winding roads knit, the texture and colours are incredible and it reminds me of a favourite designer of mine - chronicles of never. I almost don't want to sell it haha ...and in my wardrobe - my Jeffrey Campbell Alexa wedges :)

And at the top of my wishlist is this amazing Ellery jacket from their latest collection which is farrrr too expensive for me haha but it's beautiful.
